BIOGRAPHY |
| I was born in Toronto,
Ontario, Canada in 1948 and took an avid interest in art in grade 4. I
loved to attend art class at school. After viewing some of my
uninstructed attempts at shading and shaping, my art teacher told me that
my work was nothing more than a blob and a mess. She stated that I would
never be any good at art. Unfortunately I allowed that statement to influence
me
until much later in life.
I never lost my love of mental images and could take myself to magical places in my imagination at the drop of a hat. These places were always in great detail, colourful and very realistic. I dabbled in photography for a few years and discovered a great love for black and white photos. I was always fascinated by shadow and shade and composition. While writing my first book manuscript I needed images to work with and, because I could not afford to hire an artist, decided to attempt sketching myself. Those sketches - although amateurish - served the purpose which was to spur on further imagination for the manuscript. I discovered I did have talent for drawing and actually enjoyed it. My foray into the world of sketching began in 2000 and I soon discovered that I had a patience with artwork that showed very quickly in my work. I taught myself by using many books, studying other artist's sketches and asking questions. I decided to expand my knowledge and technique in 2010 and took group lessons with Alberta artist Michelle Grant http://www.michellegrant.ca/ at Swinton's Art in Calgary. I learned quickly and to quote Michelle, "This man can draw!" Unfortunately my shift work at my regular job began to interfere with lessons and I was forced to abandon them. I continued my studies with input from my sister-in-law, Marcia Schmidt, who works in pencil and oil, http://marciaschmidt.com/ Marcia added a new dimension to my work, one that has allowed it to become more and more alive. Finally, I have been influence greatly by the works of Mike Sibley, http://www.sibleyfineart.com/ . I will be taking a 3 day workshop with Mike in Los Angeles June, 2011. I was a professional musician for many years and a love of complexity in musical arrangements was a great outlet for detail. I had an uncanny ability to deliver ballad style songs in a way in which members of the audience commented they could actually imagine the story as I sang it. Later in life, I spent 11 years designing and presenting PowerPoint presentations for large companies in Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand and The UK. My love of layout and design made me a sought after presenter and course designer. I actually completed many of my early art works during flights and or while waiting in airports. My first sale consisted of an exchange of a picture of a horse's head, completed in flight, to a flight attendant for an undisclosed number of air-mile coupons. Her words erased those of my grade 4 teacher. She said, "You, sir, are an artist and don't let anyone tell you different." My desire is to create works of art that are in great detail and realistic while still being a creation of my spirit. |
